The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The highest cog railway in the world, climbing from Manitou Springs to the 14,115-ft summit of Pikes Peak in about three hours round-trip — a completely different experience from the drive, and far less white-knuckle.

Book well in advance — summer departures sell out weeks ahead. The round-trip is roughly 3 hours 20 minutes including 30–40 minutes at the summit, which is just enough time for the new visitor center and the famous donuts.

Dress warmer than you think: summit temperatures run 30–40°F colder than Manitou. Not stroller-friendly at the summit; fine for kids old enough to follow altitude rules.
