A 6,000-acre monument hiding some of the world's richest fossil deposits — petrified redwood stumps the size of a small car, plus 1,700 species of insect, leaf, and fish fossils.
About 45 minutes west via Highway 24. The Petrified Forest Loop (1 mi) is the classic short walk past the largest stumps. The visitor center has hands-on fossil exhibits that are surprisingly good for kids.
Pair with a stop in Woodland Park or Divide for lunch on the way home, or extend into Mueller State Park which is just down the road.
